Sealants are an effective way of protecting your back teeth (molars) from tooth decay and cavities. Your molars are the teeth that are most vulnerable to cavities and decay due to their role in the chewing process and the difficulty involved in reaching and cleaning these teeth.
Molars first come in when your child is 5 to 7 years old, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11 to 14. It's best to have a sealant placed by Robert B. Hurley, DDS at the first sign of molars to ensure early protection.
An adhesive is first applied to the teeth in order to place a sealant. The sealant is placed over the adhesive as a liquid by painting right onto the tooth. The liquid hardens to create a barrier between the tooth and any plaque, food particles, or bacteria. Sealants last for up to 10 years and can be reapplied if needed.
